Creating Space for Surrender: The Power of Letting Go
Letting go begins with awareness—recognizing when you’re clinging too tightly to control and plans. It’s not always easy to admit, but when you look closely, the signs are usually there. For me, one big signal is when my calendar is completely packed. If every hour of my day is scheduled, I know I’ve fallen into the trap of trying to control too much and staying busy just for the sake of being busy.
So how do we break free from this? One of the most powerful practices I’ve developed is intentionally creating space in my life to get bored. Yes, bored.
Once or twice a year, I take time to go away by myself with no agenda, no deadlines, and no plans to “accomplish” anything. The goal is to step away from distractions and let myself unwind. I avoid TV, the internet, and my phone as much as possible. Instead, I take long walks, sit quietly, and allow myself to simply be.
It usually takes me a few days to settle in, but then something shifts. I can tell I’ve hit the point of boredom because my mind starts to wander in the best way. I feel more creative, ideas start to flow, and I reconnect with a deeper part of myself—both as a person and a spiritual being.
This practice has been transformative for me because it helps me release the need to control everything. It reminds me that busyness isn’t the same as productivity, and that when we create space, we make room for the things that truly matter.
If you’re struggling with letting go, I encourage you to try this. Plan a day, a weekend, or even a week where you can step away from your usual routine. Don’t fill the time with distractions. Instead, let yourself feel bored and see what surfaces. It’s uncomfortable at first, but the insights and creativity that come from this practice are worth it.
Letting go is about more than releasing control—it’s about creating the freedom to reconnect with yourself and your purpose.
