The Beauty of Letting Go: Creating Space for Possibilities

There’s a saying you’ve probably heard before: You can’t get to great by holding onto good. For years, I understood that concept intellectually, but it wasn’t until recently that I truly lived it.

I used to cling tightly to my plans for the future—so tightly that I often describe it as holding them in a clenched fist. My plan was to quit my job at the Harley-Davidson dealership and become a keynote speaker, traveling the country to talk about leadership development and transformation. That was the dream, and I was holding onto it with everything I had.

But then life happened. When Covid hit, every single one of my speaking contracts was canceled. My perfectly crafted plan fell apart, and I didn’t know what to do next. It was during that time, through a lot of coaching work with Rose, that I realized something important: I needed to stop clenching so tightly.

What I learned was that holding your plans in an open hand—not a clenched fist—allows the universe, God, or whatever you believe in to present you with opportunities you never imagined. When we cling to our plans, we operate from a place of fear and control, and we limit ourselves to what we already know. But when we let go, we open ourselves to possibilities far beyond our bubble of experience.

For me, letting go led to art—a path I never saw coming. I discovered painting during that uncertain time, and it changed my life in ways I couldn’t have dreamed. Today, my life looks completely different from the plan I once clung to, but it’s also far more beautiful. I have freedom, flexibility, and a career that fills my heart with joy and purpose.

Letting go isn’t easy. It’s a leap of faith, a practice in trust. But I can tell you this: the possibilities that unfold when you stop trying to control everything are often far more beautiful than anything you could have planned.

If you’re holding onto a plan that no longer serves you, I encourage you to loosen your grip. Open your hand, trust the process, and see what unfolds. Transformation happens when we create space for the unexpected.
