The Layers of Surrender: Building Something Beautiful

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as an artist is that every painting is built in layers. The first layer is never perfect—it’s messy, incomplete, and often looks nothing like the final piece. But it’s essential. Without that initial layer, there’s no foundation to build on.

Life works the same way. Each experience, whether it’s joyful, challenging, or somewhere in between, is a layer in the masterpiece of who we are becoming. The key is to surrender to the process, trusting that each layer has its purpose, even if we can’t see it right away.

I remember working on a piece that felt like it was going nowhere. The colors didn’t blend the way I wanted, and I was tempted to start over. But instead of giving up, I kept adding layers—soft washes of color, bold strokes, and textured details. Slowly, the painting began to come alive. What emerged was something far more beautiful and meaningful than I ever could have planned.

Surrendering to the layers of life means accepting that not everything will make sense right away. It means trusting that each step, each moment, is part of a larger story.

So, where are you in your own masterpiece? What layer are you building right now? Whatever it is, I encourage you to embrace it fully, knowing that even the messy parts have a purpose.
