Cultivating Compassion: Starting with Yourself

We’re often our own harshest critics. Whether it’s in life, work, or even creative pursuits, the voice in our head can be quick to point out what’s “wrong” or “not enough.” But what if we shifted that voice to one of compassion instead?

As an artist, I’ve learned that self-compassion is essential. When I first started painting, I often felt frustrated when a piece didn’t turn out as I imagined. I would compare myself to other artists and think, Why can’t I get this right? But over time, I realized that growth—and creativity—requires kindness.

One of my favorite paintings came from a moment of self-compassion. Instead of criticizing myself for what wasn’t working, I gave myself permission to step back, take a breath, and approach the canvas with fresh eyes. The result wasn’t just a better painting; it was a reminder of the power of treating myself with care.

Compassion isn’t just about forgiving mistakes; it’s about embracing imperfection as part of the process. Whether you’re navigating a challenge or simply trying to grow, remember: You’re doing your best, and that’s enough.
